Curious about what communities our clients come from?
So were we. To find out, we graphed all of our 2002 statewide client intakes that contained accurate zip code information. That graph, showing clients served by zip code is here. Additional charts showing all of our 2002 intakes by type of case, island, and district on O'ahu are here.
They are both PDF files and require the use of the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® which you can download for free here.

Our clients must meet income guidelines to be eligible for services. If you need legal help, please contact us at 528-7046 (or toll free from the Neighbor Islands at 1-800-839-5200) to see if you qualify. Intake hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, and Friday.

If a person or organization qualifies, a member of our staff will determine whether or not the case can be referred to a volunteer, one of our clinics, or to one of our other projects.

For example, a client with a simple guardianship, uncontested adoption, or who needs help defending a tort action may be referred to a volunteer attorney. Clients seeking uncontested divorces or help with simple bankruptcy actions (Chapter 7) can sign up for a do-it-yourself legal clinic. Clients can also make an appointment to have documents reviewed and/or receive legal advice from a volunteer attorney at one of our Neighborhood Legal Clinics.

Victims of domestic violence may be eligible for services through our ACTEV/SAVD project, and children needing legal help will find it at our Na Keiki Law Center.

Homeless individuals and their families receive services through the Housing Support Legal Project, which regularly delivers services on-site at eight homeless and transitional housing shelters on O'ahu.

Community-based non-profit organizations needing legal help may obtain it through our new Nonprofit Project, which expands our long-standing O.L.A. (Organizational Legal Assistance) program and incorporates it with our new Nonprofit Training Project to provide both capacity-building training and legal services to nonprofits.

With the help of the Hawai'i State Bar Association, we are also able to serve, through the Gap Group Project, clients with incomes that fall above poverty level but below a living wage and therefore place them in the "gap" group. These individuals are referred to attorneys who are willing to accept fees as low as $50 per hour.

In most cases, a small administrative charge is the only cost to the client for any of our services.

If you are interested in helping a VLSH client, please e-mail us, sign-up to volunteer, or call 528-7046.
