The VLSH
Neighborhood Legal Clinics (NLCs) were launched in 1993. They currently
offer pro se (do-it-yourself) divorce and bankruptcy classes, advice and
consultation sessions, and follow-up appointments for pro se clients,
and are held at four sites on O'ahu as well as in Hilo, Lihu'e, and Wailuku. The NLCs
are often conducted in cooperation with other groups and agencies, which
have included the Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i (LASH), the Hawai'i State
Bar Association (HSBA) and its Young Lawyers Division, the William S.
Richardson School of Law, and the University of Hawai'i Elder Law Project. The initial 1993 NLCs were made possible by financial support from the law firm of Alston Hunt Floyd and Ing. Since 1994, the HSBA has made a substantial commitment to the clinics, along with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. In 1995, the LASH became a frequent co-sponsor, and in 1996, the Hawai'i Justice Foundation funded a one-year collaborative project between VLSH, the LASH, and other legal service providers in Hawai'i to further expand the clinic concept. Over the
years substantial financial and volunteer support has also come from numerous
other firms and individual members of the HSBA. If you are interested in working at an NLC, please e-mail us, sign-up to volunteer, or call 528-7058. |
