VOLUNTEERING FOR VLSH
Intake and Referral
An intake specialist will interview each client for a legal needs assessment. The client will then be referred to the appropriate VLSH program or other community resource.
Neighborhood Legal Clinics
Clients meet with licensed volunteer attorneys for a half hour appointment. Neighborhood Legal Clinics are held 4 times a month on Oahu, and once a month in Kauai, Maui, Hilo and Kona.
Uncontested Divorce Workshops
These pro se (do-it-yourself) workshops are held once a month on Oahu. Pro se uncontested divorce assistance is also offered during our regularly scheduled clinics on Kauai, Maui and the Big Island
Pro Bono Referral
Clients must first have an intake interview and initial consultation with a volunteer attorney.
Housing Support Legal Program
Workshops are held at transitional shelters on Oahu and are conducted by licensed lawyers and staff. These clinics are offered 10 times a month at various transitional shelters on Oahu.
Consumer Tax Assistance Program
Offers legal education, full representation, and advice and consultation with regard to tax disputes before the Internal Revenue Service.
Non-Profit Program
VLSH offers legal help to nonprofit organizations that have a combined program and operating budget of less than $1,000,000 and are involved in community-based economic development or are providing services to low-income
or "gap" group individuals/families. The current workshops offered are:

o Employment Law for Nonprofits
o Nonprofit Accountability
o Basics of Accounting and Internal Controls
o Fund Raising and Development Basics
o Strategic Planning
o Organizational Management and Responsibilities
o Financial Management
"YO" or Youth Outreach Program provides legal assistance to teenagers, the homeless and others through its partnership with Hale Kipa.
Young Families in Need provides statewide legal assistance to pregnant and parenting teenagers.
Parenting Plans Mediation Pilot Program, a pilot program, focuses on parenting plans that center on the interests of the child. Once mediated the parties can then file these plans in pro se contested divorce cases.
